Discovering CUVEE tres, D.O. Toro, Bodega Liberalia

The D.O. Toro of Bodega Liberalia in the province of Zamora. It is a family winery . Their vineyards are situated among the Denominación de Origen go by vino de Pago, “Grand Cru” designation.

Local varietals for the Bodega Liberalia

D.O. Toro y Bodega Liberalia : in their vineyard,  the owners grow native, ancestral varieties – Tinta de Toro, the local name for Tempranillo, for the production of Tinto, and Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Malvasia, and Albillo, for their white wines. They also grow their own Verdejo in nearby Morales de Toro. The 50-year-old vines, quenched only with rainwater, produce fewer than 3000 kg per hectare of very excellent fruit. The Grenache is grown by a neighbor specifically for Liberalia’s Dos, a blend of 80% Tinta de Toro and 20% Grenache. The Grenache adds great intensity, complexity, and concentration to the wine.

30 to 100 years old vines for their D.O. Toro Bodega Liberalia

Juan Antonio Fernandez acquired the vineyards in 1996. The vines are between 30 and 100 years old. After the purchase the first task ahead was to organize what he had just purchased and to develop a plan for the vineyards that would produce grapes for the making of world class wines. Four years later, in 2000, they made their first wines. The harvest is manual in the early morning so that the grapes arrive fresh and whole at the winery before noon to avoid any aggressivity caused by oxidation.

Some oenology tips at Bodega Liberalia …

Wines selected for aging are put into a combination of French and American Oak Barriques in a chai 10 meters underground. There they will develop at a constant cool temperature at a 65% to 85% humidity. The wines are never filtered. They are fined to avoid any harsh and damaging treatment. At Liberalia, the final step before bottling is fining. The wines are clarified, using real egg whites, during a slow, non-invasive process that eliminates the solids and particulates. The fining procedure imbues the proper limpidity and a beautiful, brilliant shine.

While the wines age in ideal surroundings they are invigorated with the musical compositions of Bach and Haendel. It is designed to convey harmony, calm, and mood, all fundamental to the delicate aging process.

A range of 11 wines at the Bodega Liberalia

They produce 11 wines : 1 Sparkling Brut Nature Traditional Method, 1 Rose-a direct cold press of Tempranillo, 1 dry white made from 100% Verdejo, 1 sweet white made from 70-year-old muscatel, and 7 reds produced from different aged vines, different levels of age in barrique, and different percentages of Tempranillo.

     I had the opportunity to taste one of their wines, and I hope I may visit their Bodega to taste the other 10 wines in the near future. the cuvee tres is made from 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo), Manual harvest, aged 6 months in American and French oak barriques, complex nose and ample palate, 14% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES

Appearance: moderate intensity purple, ruby reflections, clear, and brilliant.

Nose: youthful, moderate intensity black cherry, blackberry, sweet baking spice.

Palate: full body, intense black cherry, blue berry, powerful but not overbearing, velvety texture  and very soft tannins.

Summary: A big wine with a supple presentation. Excellent fruit throughout the palate with a  long well-balanced finish.The wine is so soft one perceives that it has no tannins. This is a good wine for wine lovers who want to learn more about the wines from Toro.
